General Rules

  1. Always tie hair back while working, using torch, flexible shaft and polishing machine.

  2. Mark your own tools to avoid loss and confusion.

  3. Return school tools to proper place when you have finished using them. All books, tools, materials, school property must remain in the school at all times. Any misplaced, broken, damaged property of the studio, are of full responsibility of the student for replacement or payment of the item or tool.

Care and use of Tools
  1. Tools should not be used with torch flames. Heat will destroy the tempering of the tool rendering them useless; only soldering tools on the soldering bench are to be used with any heat of torches.

  2. Dry all metal completely before using any tool or equipment (such as mills, drawplates, steel blocks, etc.). This will prevent tools from rusting.

  3. Be sure all metal and wax files are places in the proper drawers not to confuse and mix materials and tools. Wear goggles or glasses while filing, sawing, and using the flexible shaft and polishing wheels to prevent bits of metal or compound from flying into your eyes.

  4. Always lubricate drill bits, saw blades, and steel burs to prevent wear and damage to the tools. Be sure all tools are cleaned and dry before using.

  5. Always take a bit or bur out of shaft after use and return to proper place. All stations and trays mush be thoroughly cleaned when you are done working for the next student.

Torch
  1. Do not leave torch handle empty. When exchanging torch tips, make sure you put a tip in each handle tight and properly. Always turn torches off securely when not in use or setting up solder placement.

  2. Always check to make sure tip is in handle correctly before using as the last person may have forgotten to secure the tip.

  3. When you turn off torch, make sure flame is out before placing on workbench.

  4. Always quench hot metal in water before handling and placing into pickle pot.

  5. Be sure to keep all soldering tools on soldering bench and use only copper tongs in pickle pot, then into water and dried completely.

DO NOT QUENCH HOT METAL IN PICKLE - the sulfuric acid vapor produced by quenching in pickle is a known carcinogen. Quench your piece in water before transferring it to the pickle.
